Financial Recipients 2008
Proceeds go to good cause
A huge turnout for the 2008 HSBC Round the Bays fun run meant some outstanding donations for great causes.
This year $75,000 raised from HSBC Round the Bays was donated to the Gifted Kids Programme in support of their educational and development programmes for intellectually talented youth from disadvantaged backgrounds in New Zealand.
HSBC is one of the major supporters of the programme in New Zealand and children from the programme were on hand this year to collect the cheque and display some of the problem-solving skills, building rubbish collection devices for the playground from ice-block sticks, paperclips, sticky tape and a variety of other household items.
There is a common misconception that the Gifted Kids Programme supports children from privileged backgrounds, when nothing cold be further from the truth. What the programme does is allow students form any background to participate in an environment where they are intellectually challenged and where they can work with children with similar interests and academic levels. Often the participants in the programme do not have the financial means to take part in the types of activities offered.
The Gifted Kids Programme was established in 2000 and also received funding in 2007. Find out more about the Gifted Kids Programme.

That's a lot of money. Gifted Kids Programme particpants receive the cheque from Fairfax Media and HSBC representatives.
Other recipients
Fairfax First Books
Difficulties around reading levels and literary skills in New Zealand homes are well-documented. The Fairfax First Books scheme provides free books to kindergartens in cash-strapped areas. The aim is to make reading material available in homes so that brothers and sisters, mums and dads and entire families can share the joys of reading – while taking on valuable literacy skills while they do it. Fairfax Media launched the scheme and now a few years in, organisers are hoping that one day Fairfax First Books kids might also take part in the Gifted Kids Programme, having been given an early chance.
Youthline
A significant donation was made to Youthline, which has been helping young New Zealanders and their families since 1970, having developed a community-based approach to the development and delivery of services for young people. Youthline's vision is to create communities that relate to the needs of young people, respond to them, and support them to achieve their potential. The organisation is not just for young people at risk. It provides development pathways for the many young people who want to help their peers and communities in positive, practical ways.
